Job Title: Sales Executive
Based in: Portland
Position reports to: VP Business Development 

Job Purpose Summary: The Sales Executive plays a vital role in attracting new merchant partners to join the Marqeta network, primarily focused on local Portland merchants.

The Sales Executive will be accountable for developing relationships with key merchants in our target verticals that ultimately lead to their joining the network. Because of the critical role of these merchants in our network, it is expected that the Sales Executive will be able to generate leads, develop relationships and regularly close new 'sales' on a weekly basis. The ideal candidate will be an experienced sales and business development professional who is capable of leading his/her own efforts while still contributing thought leadership, tools, approaches and relationships to the Business Development team.


Key Responsibilities

• Works with the Business Development team and other executives to develop an overall strategy for acquiring local merchants, including:
o Generate target lists
o Establish initial contact and meetings
o Develop leads to the point of 'yes' 
o Close new merchants as evidenced by signed merchant contracts


Requirements

• 1 - 2 years experience in sales or business development roles, preferably in retail environment
• Broad and strong relationships within Portland market
• Experience with consumer payments, discounting, couponing and/or digital marketing, a plus
• Familiarity and experience with payments, transactional processing, a plus
• Self-motivated and highly organized
• Detail-oriented with strong time-management and problem-solving skills
• Consultative yet strong sales approach
• Ability to communicate through in-person meetings and through concise written briefs
• Ability to balance the needs of the merchant with those of the internal team, linking those needs to opportunities for monetization

Education: Bachelor's degree preferably in business, marketing or finance; advanced degree a plus

Technology skills: Solid understanding of how applied technologies can help engage merchants and consumers. General understanding of the merchant payments process and an ability to connect emerging product and technology developments to merchant needs, and translate into compelling value propositions. An understanding of financial products and payments technology tools is a plus.

Business and Selling Skills: Must truly love selling and be highly driven to close new business. Must feel at home with executives of medium size merchants and work thoughtfully through merchant organizational dynamics, find the appropriate advocates and build momentum for the Marqeta value proposition internally. Must be an excellent face-to-face, email and phone communicator able to communicate effectively with senior leaders of large, usually public, companies. 

Management Ability: Proven ability to collaborate within the business development function, across the Marqeta team, and within prospective merchant teams. Confident and humble. Self-starter and team collaborator. Ability to garner respect and 'followship' through charisma, relationships of mutuality and a collaborative spirit, rather than through positional authority.
